Over/Under for finishers
« on: November 14, 2008, 11:40:39 AM »
So now that the competition time is half over do we have any predictions for number of entries that will actually submit a game.  Completing a game is a super tough thing to do.  I fancy my own chances for getting my game done but I am open to the possibility that I won't make it in time.

Currently there are 18 "entries".  I think.

My guess is that we have 10 complete games submitted.

Personaly, I think there will be less than 10 games ready by the deadline.

Currently there are 3 games online:
http://mageduels.net76.net
http://moonstone-rpg.com/
http://www.cubiclebattles.com/ (registration disabled)
In my opinion it is a suicide to wait till the very end to make a release, when will be the time for fixing bugs and balancing and polishing?

My pick of people who are a "threat" :D
- saljutin - nothing shown yet, 1 game finished, but I happen to see his coding style and it was impressing, athrough the design doc looks quite demanding on the balancing part so he might not make it in time.
- Zeggy - screens posted, 2 games finished, I think he will make it (unless his laziness take over him :D), fortunatelly his theme seems quite boring :)
- JohnMunsch - one screen posted, I do not know why, but the screen made me feel like the game is very solid and functional and bugfree.

What are your predictions?

Cute, gossiping about browser games, never done it before but already love it :D

Hmm, I'm worrying a bit about how many will finish  :P

How is yours going Chris?

I'll be honest, I haven't coded anything in the last two weeks... But I'll start doing some more right now!

I'm a bit concerned about my own entry at the moment, to be honest.

Between Fallout 3 and Real Life, I haven't touched the game for a good week or two. The only reason I am not withdrawing from the contest (yet?) is because I might be able to get another whirlwind coding spree started in a day or two.

Fallout 3... Yeah.... That has basically killed my Real Life!

I had to unsubscribe an MMO I have been playing for months to free up time to finish my entry. The sacrifices we make!

I'm not sure am I able to add everything I have planned to the game, but the game is playable even now. I hope that counts for something :P

Btw Chris, your game is nice, I like it. :)

I can send you pics of my cocks if you want reference.

My moonstone is doing fine, under emergency I could make the final version in 3 days. Spent 6 real work days so far, so there is minimum 6 days left (probably more since you have more motivation during the second half of the project and major obstacles are dealt with already, I hope I can squizze out 15 workdays total. I know, these figures are pathetic for a 61 days compo (barely working a bit more than once per week) but still there are *some* competitors who are even more lazy (which make me feel a huge lot better :)). My only concern is if I do not go stupid and start working on some big feature which could not be finished on time :D

I think everyone who do not have anything online should strive to release something in the next week. It helps, really, trust me. Also I remind than once you finished you will be given a nice "GameOwner" title and a big green star next to your name and  also an access to the Game Owners board only :)

Zeggy, I changed my sponsorship prize, everyone who made a playable game which is on a reasonably stable server and is PG13 will have a two months link on Lords (PR3 page) regardless of the place they got.

I have to admit that Real Life has been preventing me from putting as much effort into my entry as I would like - while I am still hopeful that I will be able to submit something, I am beginning to think that that something may end up being far more stripped-down than I would like.

I really hope as many contestants as possible finish this. As I am very interested in seeing what they achieve within this time limit.

 ;D

Yes, you can register for Iron-Empire but you can't do much else, so mine's not a serious contender!

I have completed an online game before:

http://www.globalconflict.org.uk

It was doing quite well initially but it had a serious flaw in the deadbeats/dropouts killed it, I intend revisiting it at some stage to try to sort out a solution to that problem.

I've also got another game that is stalled about half-way:

http://www.pit-stop.ismysite.co.uk/

This was my first ever attempt at writing anything using PHP and with hindsight was crazily ambitious, I got stuck with the real-time race code although I do hope to revisit it at some stage in the future as I am now fairly proficient at PHP.

So, I reckon we can get a playable prototype of Iron-Empire ready, but it wont be a totally finished game.  So I'm not bothered about winning the competition, but I see it as a good way to get motivated, a way to meet some other people suffering the same stresses :) and a way to attract some beta testers when the time comes.

Good luck and may the best game win!

 ;D

Online so far:
http://www.cubiclebattles.com
http://www.iron-empire.com
http://www.mageduels.net76.net
http://www.moonstone-rpg.com
http://www.npcrpg.info (registration require beta password)
http://www.piratesglory.com

The end is near. So, how is everyone doing? What are you predictions? Can we expect a black horse emerging at the very end of the race or the above is all that counts?

I'm pretty sure my effort will be ready in one form or another, in fact it's just about playable now.  Not sure how professional looking it will be though!

I started too late. But I am sure I will have a basic version running really soon. Perhaps today.

Well I'm not going to make it unfortunately.  I even cut out Fallout 3 since then, but the need to feed myself and my kid has taken priority.

Krez, I can completely relate.  I thought I would be finishing up my game over the Thanksgiving holiday, but between my kid and my hard drive crashing I got 0 done.  I am now busting my butt hoping to make the deadline with something playable.

11-th December. They took the 'final entries' topic down, so I assume it means he deadline just ended. I think there were 5 final entries submitted.

Time to have a short break then :D So, what are your conclusions after participating in this competition?

As for me, I liked it, it always helps me to focus when I have a whip over my head :D I also found out an avalanche effect, after the game reaches certain playability, your willingness to work on it every day grows considerably. I had much, much higher productivity at ther end of the competition that at the beginning.

I actually had the opposite. In the begining I was writing faster than ever, but in the begining things slowed down alot. Funny, isn't it.
