When next competition starts?
« on: January 07, 2009, 02:07:03 PM »
So, when we start the next one? :D I can't wait :)

Who is gonna to participate and have you decided on the game type you will make?

I think mine will be a space strategy with interstellar diplomacy (a few planets, many players share a planet, they can vote on the planet leaders, also they vote on the imperial senate, mix of cooperation and competition between "planet mates") or a hero guild manager (you recruit heroes, set prices for quests like "save the world", get contracts and send a party of heroes to fulfill the contract).

Haha, already looking to make a new game? :)

For the first competition I wanted it to be very open so many people could participate. For the next one, I'd like to impose restrictions on the 'theme' of the contest entries, so games have to revolve around a specific element.

Some examples are:
Underwater (fish? submarine warfare?)
Assassins (such as bounty, law, historic [assasin's creed-style] or modern [hitman-style])

And I guess there will be a choice of several themes so you can choose which one would be fun to make, or you could make one that incorporates all themes. Also make suggestions for themes that you'd like to see and would be interesting! :D

What do you mean by "already"? It has been whole 3 months since the last one started! :D

As for restrictions on theme, no problem, as long as it is the theme I want :D
But give it at least a chance to be marketable (no underwater or other weird ones).
And... uhm, no 2 month marathons, something quicker would be nice :D

As for themes, I think 'economy' would be nice. Quite flexible, you could make a company simulator, lemonade stand, sea trade, airline tycoon, witch simulator (an old hag selling various suspicious potions), enchanter simulator (enchant magic swords to passing by heroes) and so on.

Another competition sometime would be cool, I need something to motivate me to get a move on, and I only found this board with about a week left on the old competition :D
Even though my planned game will take many a year to complete a smaller prototype could be themed to match the criteria and entered :D

I'm still working on my last effort and wont be looking to do anything new for a few months yet.  But possibly by summer I might be interested and I do have plenty of ideas.

I might be up for joining next time, bit busy right now but I'll be needing a new project in a couple months...

What are the rules for pre-existing code though? Does it include frameworks?

Projects: Pith Framework (at 0.5), CactusGUI (at 0.3)

Frameworks are allowed, such as open source frameworks or ones you made yourself in the past.

That's good to hear, as I'm currently working on a framework for myself, and didn't fancy rewriting it all again to be able to use the tech for a competition :D

I'll definitely try to enter the next competition, I started putting stuff together for the last one but did not have the time to make anything presentable.
I'm also hoping it will be a slightly longer timeframe, I don't have a lot of time to work on games unfortunately...

You should limit the amount of code you can write.

Who can write a good game with less than 1000 characters or something.
- "I sentance you to life"
- "You moron I'm already alive"

When you say characters I hope you mean players, and not the number of letters within a php document, otherwise a 1000 characters of text would be a complete nightmare to program :P

Yeah I mean text. Well maybe not 1000, but something like that.

I disagree :D. I hope you will take the time to prepare the competition. Perhaps even place some ads somewhere so it can become an intresting event, again. I'm curious what the theme of the competition will be, and also when you are  planning to start it.

Personally i would rather the time be taken to organise the next competition properly.

I would also love to see some categories introduced, for those that havent coded agame before, or for those usin an existing code base....I wouldnt necesarily require that each category comes with prizes, I think it would be fine to keep all the prizes for the overall winner.

I actually think the time frame is fine, or could even be extended a bit, after all there were plenty of entries that were still in what i would call an early alpha stage, or that nevemade it to the final entry stage because they wernt completed in time. It has to be remebered that many of us do this as a hobby and as such dont have large amounts of time to devote. This is especially true if you dont allready have a framework of existing standard features that you can use.

I don't like the different categories idea.

1. It does not change anything. BoozeQuest and Tygras, the first one created from scratch by a lone person without any budget, the second by a bunch of people with high budget, extra cute gfx, etc. Now, compare how many points each of these got  :)

2. It is no good for newbies. OK, it is my first game, I won the first place. Yuppi, I'm the best among the most inexperienced ones... Second scenario, I got third place competing among the best of the best. Which one would be a better reward for you? :D

3. Life is harsh and unfair. Once you put the game online no one will ask nor care what was your experience, or budget, or time. You will be competing with big companies with hordes of well paid staff, huge advertising budget, and so on. And you will have to win with them the competition for players. It is better if you get used to it from the start.

I wouldn't mind some handicap for those who make the first game. Maybe they could get a bit more time, or less strict rules regarding theme, I do not know. But in the end, everyone should be judged like everyone.

Also... I would love if there was a requirement, you can enter the competition only if you have a working login and register system that is put online. It just does not make sense if you start the competition and then have to deal with stuff like unexpected basic SQL problems or broken FTP... Let's face it, half of the competitors never got to this stage, why? Because they were thinking too much about the gameplay and then never had the strength to make the basic stuff working. I'm sure this would increase the number of final entries, since when you have something working online, no matter how simple, it gives you a huge motivation boost.

Anyway, I can agree on anything, just start the competition as soon as you can :D

It's been quite quiet on the forum lately. So are there any concrete plans around the next competition, Zeggy?

So, since we have the site back, when a new competition starts?

And to avoid unnecessary posting, I do not agree with the date given on the post below, it should be earlier :D

Hard to say as some things are out of our hands.

1. First the forums need to be re-indexed by the search engine bots so we can get some new faces here

2. Need to finish (erm start) the coding for the main bbgamezone.net page

3. Need to establish some sort of partnership(s) with other sites so we can give out some cool prizes

We'll work on the second two items as much as we can and hope we get indexed quickly.

2.
Code: [Select]
<centre><big><b><br><br>Welcome to bbgamezone!<br><br><a href=http://community.bbgamezone.net>FORUM</a></b></big>
3. Previous competition: 1-st place BoozeQuest http://npcrpg.info, PageRank:4. Do you see any outgoing links on the site? Or toplist, link exchange? Or anything? Or maybe the domain is 10 years old? Nope, PR4 without ANY effort, just because people posted on their blogs about the winner. If this is not a very cool prize, then what is? :D

bbgamezone.net is indexed, no trace of .com anymore unless you query "bbgamezone.com". Google seems to be good when it comes to disabling parked domains :D
