Coding Discussion / Re: Representing a city with structures grahically
« on: April 13, 2012, 10:22:01 AM »
Ok, let's imagine i want to have something like this:

to summarize:

1) I need to create the structure of a city and cache it/serialize it somewhere. If something changes (i.e. building added or removed), I will invalidate the cache and rebuild the city structure/reserialize it
2) On load, get the serialized city, parse it, send a json request to a framework (example JSCrafty) and render it.

Demo that i can use/copy: http://craftyjs.com/demos/isometric/

Question: but when i serialize the city in a BLOB, cant I serialize also the AREA information, so when a user will hover/click on the area map i will show the related-building functions?

thanks.

Revenue & Promotion / Re: Affiliation program

Maybe i explained myself not correctly; Ok for the webmasters, but i was considering players, that can invite friends (paying friends) or make advertising (posting in forums with the link) and thus get real money for their referral.

Revenue & Promotion / Affiliation program
« on: March 23, 2012, 05:23:23 AM »
Hi, i saw that some games gives the opportunity to some webmasters to subscribe to an affiliation program.
The webmaster then could get a % of the money for the 'leads' they provide and that are paying.

1) Is there already a company that offer this service so i can integrate my game with its services, or i have
to code everything from scratch?

2) Is it a complicated things to do (legally etc) and do you suggest to do it?

Thanks

I was looking at the 3rd BBG meeting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmV0iXa4414) and particularly on the advice about Illiryad devs about Legal Advice & templates.

Anyone knows where to retrieve templated or someone that can help us in fixing up our terms and condition?

Thanks

Contacting a game owner can be costly (time-wise)...

If he must be contacted ingame or via forum, you need to register a user, in this case the cost to contact the owner is higher.[/li][/list]

I may have found one game owner that isn't costly to get in touch with ;)
Do you own Medieval Europe? If so, you should seriously consider adding it to BTG.

    Ah ah ok, I will.

    • If he has an email or a contact form on the website, the cost is low.

@Chris: Forcing the registration a game in a toplist can be ok in order to show a non empty toplist. However the most important thing for a toplist is that the registered games are voting. thus bringing traffic to the toplist.

According to what I read so far the industry standard is:
    - ARPU - always monthly income and MAU (so it is used as ARPMAU), it's because this term was coined in telecomunication industry and they used it as monthly
    - ARPDAU/ARPDU - daily income per DAU so the "ARPDAU - monthly income/DAU" would be wrong, should be "ARPDAU - monthly income/30.5/DAU".

    OK, fixed.

"Total Registered Users" - is a completely useless metric, in Lords I have 180000 because it is an old game. But it means nothing... Also, some games delete inactive users after some period, this changes this and several other metrics heavily. Check the retention rate topic, some games have simply no data of inactives after 45 days.

I would like to keep it. It tells me if my toplists/adv choice are ok. (I check the delta of registered each month).

    Quote
"% of paying users" - again problematic, at the beginning my Lords were without any payment options, so I would have this number artifically low. Also, if you allow players to transfer funds to others you might be unable to track who paid and who donated (and should we tread those who made others to pay for them count as donators or not?)

Looking around, it seems a valuable statistics. Maybe it should be calculated for each month. I agree it should be defined better.

    Quote
Read about "conversion rate", it could be a nice one to add.

    Will do.

    Quote
"New Registered users" - rename to "New Registered users (monthly)" because it is not obvious at the first glance.

    Fixed

    Thanks, keep feedback going!

I created the following Google spreadsheet:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgpRfco82JokdEZFclNWVVFSalNiNXFoQXJ2S0ZjZnc

It is a starting point from where we can create a common template to calculate game metrics.

We need to agree on terms and how to calculate parameters, if we collaborate we will have a common tool useful for everyone.

    Thanks.

    An update about my topsites:

    http://www.top-pbbg.com (international list) PR 3
http://www.topwebgames.it (italian list - for italian market) PR 3

On both sites you can write details about your game, publish news, screenshots and exclusive offers, set a voting link and rewards for players who vote your game.

Expecially if you don't have much money to invest on advertising, topsites are the best method to get visits and new customers.

We recently made a partnership with the Game Portal GamesWorld Online (http://www.gamesworldsa.com); As a registered member you will have the following bonuses:

    1) The game who will be at 1st position at the end of the month will have a banner on the GamesWorld Online portal.
    2) If a game reaches more than 300 votes, a review (provided by the Game Owner) will be published on the GamesWorld Online, bringing more exposition to your game.

It's strongly suggested - once registered -  to put the voting button/link on your game, in this way both our sites will get higher ranks in search engines and get more traffic.

Thank you Chris. I will create a google spreadsheet; it would be a nice thing if the community collaborate so we can share an easy and understandable template so any gane owner can calculate some metrics.

I am a bit confused... I have a average DAU of 491 players. Let's say the monthly income is 1000 Euro.

    a) In this case, what is ARPU? I don't understand why i should take as MAU the average of DAU. If i count players who last logged in in february I have about 1300...

    Thanks

    I have a question:

I would like to display a village with an interactive picture like the following one:

(i will order the picture to a graphic artist).

The village may or may not have the castle, or the tribunal or some other structures. If the players decide to build a particular structure,
a building site will appear where (for example) the red circle is and when completed, the real building will appear.
Clinking on the structure will open a tooltip with a menu.

I found this in many games so I guess is something that can be done in some way.

I think what should be done is:

1 - let a graphic design the basic village picture
2 - create some divs and position them absolutely on the village
3 - set the picture in the div in relation with the village status on the database

What is a possible/best technique to accomplish what i need? Using CraftyJS? Custom solution?

    Thanks

I am computing metrics following this article.

    http://globaldecision.com/blog/online-gaming-analytics/arpu-arppu-arpmu-ltv-cac-cpa/

Basicly i have a CTA = 0 (i got subscription from topsites) but i think i have a very bad LTV. This is because ME gives very little personal rewards and it is mainly a collaborational game, need to improve personal rewards.

Sorry if i revive this topic again...

    I am starting to compute DAU;

To compute ARPPU how i can calculate paying users? I mean, I should count all the users that have paid in a certain month or all the users that at least made a payment?
(I think the first option is correct).

    Thanks

I have some questions on monetarization:

    1) How can i calculate MAU and DAU?
    2) To calculate ARPU i am dividing the average income by the active users after a year. Is it correct?
    3) What is a good ARPU value for a game?
    4) Anyone has suggestions to improve ARPU?
    5) What is a good value for retention after 30, 60, 120 days?

    Thanks

    gettext

I have seen shortly the gettext thread. Kohana translation mode is very similar.
If one has a big game, I suppose he will have more than one .po file like:

    character_actions.po
    global.po
    errors.po
    ...

If you have to translate 10 files, you should distribute 10 * n translator files to the translators and they should edit them with po editor.

Now if at one point in time (and this happens if you are constantly changing the hgame), you have to change how strings are distributed in file, one is in a big trouble.

Kohana translation system works on the same principle as gettext.
The translation is based on arrays though:

    'tag' => 'translation'

    My tools:

    1) scans all the .po files, match the tag and put in columns (italian, english, german etc) the translation or blank.

    Example:
    Code: [Select]
    file                 tag    italian   english   german
    num.php              one     uno      one

    2) the xls file is published on google doc and translator fills the blank fields of their column in parallel.
    3) from the xls file, the tool generates back the translation files.

It seems efficient to me and i can run the tools many times he want, as it works with delta.

    Forum
Don't know what to reply because i don't still have clear ideas on what to do. I am sure I want a forum in-game, because I did it already and despite the effort, SMF or PHPBB were just better and more fun.

Sure the forum can be more integrated in the game, but this seems to me a change with a lower priority. On the contrary, we should find a solution about how to handle different languages in forum before opening or advertising the game.

gettext could be super, but i use an internal library of kohana that just works fine and has a caching system too. This saves a lot of time. From what i read even with gettext i should edit/prepare different files for each language, so there is still the organizational problems to manage [number of files ] *  [number of languages] that i think i am addressing fine with the tool i am doing.

About the multi-language, an idea could be to substitute smf with phpbb. With phobb you can create n subforums for each roleplay board and then give full permission to the king, limited to that forum.

Why i should reinvent the wheel and code a forum IG?
