Radiation shelter translation project
« on: May 09, 2011, 01:02:05 PM »
If you want to get some experience in translation (standard gettext) that's the project for you.

The goal:
- to get experience in the whole translating process which include:
* code and technical problems (as coder)
* creating and updating translation files (as translator)
* organising translation process like sharing files (as manager)

We will be translating this tiny mini game http://worldoflords.com/misc/games/radioactiveshelter/translation/ (total of 30-50 strings, so minimum work and maximum learning and having fun). First we will do initial translation in several languages and fix possible problems then we will simulate a few "real situations" like I would be making "unexpected" changes in the code and we will see how difficult would it be to keep translation files updated. Should be a lot of fun :D

The code is already written, for translation we will be using PoEdit http://www.poedit.net/download.php (it is a standard translation editor), as for how to organize sending files I have no clue.

If you want to join just drop your name (if you want to be translator tell which language you reserve; if you don't know any non english language but still want to translate something you can claim Australian or US English) (if you want to help organize things or help in other way just drop your name without reserving any language).

Creating language (done only once):
- post here the language name, language_COUNTRY code, country ISO_3166 code http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1_alpha-2, character set (example: Polish, pl_PL, PL, ISO-8859-2)
- download locale file (in attachment), create a directory named as language_COUNTRY and copy the translation files from already existing provided languages
- download and install PoEdit http://www.poedit.net/download.php
- click on the .po file of your newly created language directory, the PoEdit will launch
- go to catalog/settings and change the the country, language, characterset to correct one, also delete all existing translations in the wrong language (since you copied it from existing language file) then save the modified file

Editing language file (done many times):
- download and install PoEdit http://www.poedit.net/download.php
- download locale file (in attachment)
- click on the .po file of the desited language
- edit things (really trivial)
- click save button :)
- zip the archive (only your language to avoid confusion, delete all others!) and make an attachment or send it some other way

After creating language step is done and you provide first edited language file (it does not need to be fully translated, it works fine as half translated, just make sure some text with national characters appears so we can check if everything works properly) I will add the language to the game.

Here you are... is that really all? I think there were some more texts in the game...

Marked "fuzzy" the translations I wasn't 100% sure about

Well, we are trying to simulate a big project here :D So, the rest is "not done yet" :)

OK, "CS" added and uploaded. Post here also the charset for CS language, so I can add it to HTML. BTW, is there a way to extract the charset from the .po file? Or do we need to store it separately in some PHP array?

A new cute US+GB flag for all EN languages added :)

New translation is ready. This time I did it as en_DEFAULT only, this is a raw strings list without any translation (I figured it would be too troublesome for a coder to update like 20 or more separate language files after each change). I think there is some merge option that would let you combine the new strings with your existing cs_CZ file. If you manage to do it post how you did it :)

charset is the same as Polish ISO-8859-2 or the current WINDOWS-1250 (or well...UTF-8 :) )

Really!? Czech codeset will work with UTF-8? You have it easy :) In Poland we have 2 incompatible charsets (also OS depending) and there are internet wars which one should be used :D

New default file (attachment), contains additional strings with information from translators (name and date). Also there is one string with game version for which the default file was generated, filled by the coder. Will be handy when there are many files, to keep up which is outdated.

Added translation information box.
