Seeking Help For Horse-Based Game
« on: November 23, 2007, 06:31:57 PM »
Hey everyone,

For months I've been learning whatever I can about PHP and MySQL in order to play around with game development without much luck. Because of that, I'm looking for like-minded individuals who know a bit more about coding than I do who would like to lend a hand.

I am very familiar with CSS, HTML and web development. I'm also a freelance artist and writer, covering all of that. I am still interested in learning PHP, MySQL and maybe a few others (Java, AJAX, recommendations), so whoever lent a hand wouldn't have all of the work foisted off onto them.

The game is intended to be turn-based and initially cover horse racing. Players catch a wild horse (randomly generated), raise and train it, then move on to eventing. In the future, I would like to include breeding your own horses as well as offering more than racing for players. In addition, the game will launch for free, then have a payable account in the future. If/when we get that far, profits will be divided up (until then, whoever lends a hand is getting paid as much as I am - which amounts to right around nothing, though if you need web space for a project I may be able to swing that).

A long list of ideas has already been written out to brainstorm over, am open to new ideas and understand that the process takes a long time - hence starting small and working up from there. I already have connections with other players who would be interested in playtesting and am online often. Paid for webhosting that supports PHP/MySQL is already set up with plenty of space and bandwidth for development.

If you're interested, have any questions and/or would like to team up, I can be reached at kayaunia at gmail com.

Thanks in advance,

Kay-

I'm interested but have some questions...

Have you thought about the game layout and interface yet?

How do you imagine the races happening?

I could probably answer your questions better one-on-one (where I can clarify what exactly you are wanting to know, as silly as that sounds).

If I'm understanding you correctly, then I have already pieced together both. I'd like to go with a minimalist, simple design for the actual HTML side of things, both to make the page sizes smaller and to keep things from being too cluttered. As for the game interface, I'd like to work in both interaction with the computer (ie. "Overnight, X occured. What is it you would like to do?"), and with other players, such as buying, selling, trading and eventing/competing.

For races, have ones specifically against the computer both to earn a little money and to get a feel for how your horse is doing, then ones against other players. Probably with a specific time frame for all players to enter, then the event running. Once the race runs it lists the order and times.

Since I'm still playing around with coding, I'm open to ideas. What I'm picturing is an extremely text-based game, which isn't set in stone - it simply seemed like the least complex way to go about things.

Feel free to give me a kick with any other questions and what you might be interested in seeing done. I'll be hanging around this forum while playing with code and can also be reached by email and by some IMs.

Thanks,

Kay-
