Something I'm working on
« on: July 30, 2007, 11:06:14 AM »
After posting in dvd's dominion siege topic, I decided to start a game based on the ideas I had then.

After a lot of doing-nothing and reading some books I got bored and started working on a basic layout.
Here's what I've got so far and I would like to hear your comments or criticism on it.

the rows can be highlited by single-clicks and de-highlited by double clicks. Just to help the player decide which building he has to build.

the current game-basics can be read here (I suggest reading the whole thread and helping dvd out as well ;) )

That was it for me.

It still needs a name. I was thinking naming it Strive for Supremacy. I already started a game with that name, but never completed it.

Yeah! 300 posts :D

I like your feature of row highlighting :)
About your layout, is that the way it looks in a browser? 100% screen width?
I'm not a fan of layouts that stretch all the way across the screen, but I guess it's just a personal preference.
I don't particularly like the way the links are set out, I prefer them to be ordered either vertically or horizontally, and if there are too many links, you might want to think about javascript (or css) link trees.

Can't think of anything else :P The colours are dark but they're fine I guess :P

No, it's not 100% it's about 880px in width. I agree it is a bit large at the moment. I will probably size it down to 6-700px.
[€∂¡†]: I shortened it by 100px now. looks a bit better I think.

I wanted to get away from the generic left-sided navigation bar (or in some cases right-sided), but there are too many links for a simple horizontal navigation bar. And the problem with dynamic navigationbars (drop down menus) is that a lot of users still use IE and then it would look just weird and would probably not even work correctly.

Or what exactly did you mean by link-tree?

Erm, yeah, I meant a drop down menu :P
I think it's possible to make them with just css though, so it should look alright in IE.

IE6 doesn't support the :hover pseudoclass unless it is a link.
IE7 does however. I'll just include some linkpages for those who use IE6.

Ok: I removed the current link-setup and put in a drop down menu. Sucker took me long enough to get it working.
I also made the layout liquid. I like it better this way, eventho Zeggy doesn't like it :)

Image 2: Layout with an active drop-down menu

This is only a quick mock-up to demonstrate what I have in mind. C&C (comments and criticism) are welcom.

Nice :)
btw, here's a tutorial that somehow fixes the problem with IE using only CSS. I don't really understand how it works, but maybe you could get it to work :)

It's not that hard to get it working, I'm just not sure wheter I want to encourage Windows user to keep using IE6 :) I guess I'll just tell them to go download firefox and be done with it.
And for the really stubborn users I will redirect the top link (Headquarters, Communcation and so on) to a javascript pop-up navigation list. Or a link-collection. I'll see about that.

Btw: the fix is a workaround through .htc files which work mainly with mouseevents and (pseudo)javascript. The tutorial you provided doesn't really change the style itself but rather switches Classnames withouth the user having to do it. Or at least that's what I'm guessing (just took a brief look at it)
