I wonder how his cost/profit estimates work in the real world, any game-owners care to comment?

I wouldn't say these figures are wrong but I wouldn't say these are right either. He forgotten about plenty of costs like taxes, obligatory social insurance (in some countries), promotion (I would call for 50-80% of income for aggresively promoted games), salary for paid staff (which is unavoidable if you go for 50k active players). But for an article and for learning purposes these figures are good enough.
