Paypal and Fraud
« on: December 06, 2006, 02:57:03 PM »
Anyone have any problems with paypal donations in any game that you've ran?  The reason I ask is that I recently started offering turns for donations on one of my game sites.  Things seemed to be going pretty well, a few donations the first day as I suspected there would be.  I'm just a little uneasy about players making donations and getting the turns for the game, then submitting an unauthorized activity claim so they can get the donations back from paypal.

Welcome to the joys of running an online game!!!!  -_-

Been charging for turns now for about 3-4 years and I've only ever had a FEW issues with people doing that.. The best advice I can offer is when you do see a large amount of transactions come in from one account just keep the money in the PayPal account for about 5-7 days just to make sure it clears.  The worse one I ever had was transfered the monies guy bought a LOT of turns and I ended up -100+ in my paypal account cuz I had already withdrawn the money...

I guess people don't tend to cheat too much in online games, as their accounts can be banned easily, so they would lose more if they act that way.
I am going to start offering advantages to "premium users" soon in some of my games. Wish me luck!

This month alone I got stuck with 12 chargebacks claiming unauthorized use.  The chargebacks and fee's are over $200.  If I wouldn't have kept a warchest with some funds in it for my games I would have probably had to close some of them.

Anyone else have things like this happen?

Probably just me and my bad luck like always...  -_-

I hate to dissapoint you but it happend to me before. It got so annoying that I quit paypal alltogether and stopped the premium feature. I'm still looking for a new way of handling payment, tho.

Oh, btw: this link might be a good read if you think Pay"Pal" screwed you over.

Paypal had little to do with it really.  It was more the fact that someone used a stolen credit card and made donations with it in order to gain turns in the games.  Thats what really ticked me off.

I wouldnt worry too much about it

Ban them if they refund or chargeback or whatever.... even if they make a claim and dont win ban them.... they are no good for you.

Anyhow it is annoying but happens rarely.... and the only real time it happens is if your game offers cash prizes
I sell and make lots of things... talk to me via Instant Messenger if you need anything at all really
