Early Engine -- In Need of Test Sites
« on: October 21, 2008, 02:41:50 AM »
I'm in the planning stage for a new engine, but before things really get started I need to find three to five individuals who can test and use it. Those who meet the below requirements, and are fine with everything else mentioned, will have a chance at getting a free license for the code. Plus other things not mentioned here. If you're interested, PMs would be preferred.

Requirements:
   * Decent ideas
      - Your ideas will make or break your game, so you need:
         + Good Gameplay Ideas
         + Good Ideas for Events

         More than that, your game will be a reflection on the engine
         so good ideas are a must if you want to get in on this

   * Original-sounding Name and Domain Name
      - With few exceptions, they should not contain any of the following:
         + Game, life, mafia, mob, online, war
         + Random meaningless letters or numbers

         This will also make or break your chances to get in

   * Good hosting, PHP 5, MySQL 5 and FTP Access
      - Preferably with register_globals off
      - Crontabs would also be nice, but will be optional
      - FTP Access is a requirement, as I can't stand going through admin panels

   * A fair amount of competency and common sense
      - Can't be giving this to just anyone, you need to be competent
         enough to be able to manage your staff, who in turn need a similar
         level of competency in managing users

         When in doubt, use common sense

   * Your own graphics artist
      - Optional, but would be nice

Planned feature highlights:
   * Easily accept Payments and Donations
      - PayPal IPN and API

   * Itemizer
      - A simple language for writing item events that allows you
         to safely and easily create special events for items

   * Ajax from the ground up
      - Pages are automatically changed to load dynamically,
         with little to no page planning necessary

   * Extensive logging and tracking
      - Failed logins and break-in attempts
      - Suspicious SQL queries
      - Referral overflow and Multis

What you'll get:
   * An extremely flexible and customizable game engine

   * A free license to use the engine on up to 10 domains
      - A $299 value

   * Access to Pre-release and Alpha Plugins

Notice:
   This will be an ongoing process that may take more than a year to complete. If you can't wait on having a playable game for at least 4-6 months, this isn't for you. I also reserve the right to terminate any agreements, expressed or implied, whenever and/or however I like.

The catch:
   I don't like other programmers messing with my code, so you won't be allowed to hire a programmer during the time I'm building the engine. Other than that, there isn't one. You get a free license, you don't have to pay for anything but hosting, and you get an engine that isn't in use on hundreds of other sites.

   I do, however, request 5% royalties for the use of the engine. And possibly a link to the site to buy the engine, once it's made available to the public. But all that's optional.

Final notes:
   In case this should ever come up, I do require a level of authority in the game, almost that of the owner. This is mainly to allow me to test bugs in the backend, and throughout the game. Though this is only required for this particular offer, and only during the building process.

Disclaimer:
   Features and goals may change, be moved to later releases, or dropped entirely.

I would be interested in this for one of my two next projects "Poker Broker" (influence based risk-like sim, political & market aspects) or "Cowboy Slang" (working title) which is slotted to be a wild west themed "play daily" RPG.

However 5% of eventual revenue (if any) is not something I'm willing to pay to beta test a new engine (that hasn't come out yet).  The only other term I find disagreeable is the near ownership levels of permissions, if I were to do that it would have to be with a "test set" of my game, as I'd rather not have someone with the keys to a lot of my work.  If you are flexible on those two points let me know.
