always good for some intresting ideas!
« on: July 21, 2008, 01:20:37 PM »
Nobody posted anything today, so i thought just to have something to discuss about to see if you have some intresting idea's for my new game  :D

Now, the concept of the game is already finished, but this is the time where I can still easely change something in my plan. I am making an economy simulation game. it's simillar to miniconomy.com (does anybody knows that game?) but with a few big differences and in a medieval setting(but with elements of today's life, like the stock exchange for example).

In this game there would be just trading between players, that's what make's it intresting! i want to stimulate the feeling that you are ONLY trading with other players, and a certain feeling that goes with it (just can't explain exactly :'().

So if anyone has some intresting ideas or whatever, bring it on!

You might have serious problems with cheaters. If you can sell goods for any price, they will create many accounts to feed the primary one. You need trading mechanics that will prevent this somehow.

As for medieval game, I would go for adventure/trade type. Like focus on travelling between cities with random events on the way. Merchants back then had a very different life than today traders :)

Adding politics and prestige would be nice too (check Patrician and Merchant Prince)

I would discard the stock exchange, it does not fit the theme.

I will built in some protection yo cheaters. Like minimum prices, wich would be around the expected production price.

With that travelling thing I want to do something, but any ideas of intrestign ways of travelling? Because I don't like the boring stuff of: "click this link to go to city 2"

I will check out these games.

But I won't discard the stock exchange. The whole idea is to be a medieval/contemporary - trade game.

Thanks for your reply!

Why not simply click a link to travel?
You could disable their actions for a certain amount of time while they are getting to their destination depending on how far they are going, and charge them money as well.

On the way random events can happen, for example they can get robbed (with multiple outcomes), they can find something, etc., and those random events might also affect the time it takes for them to travel. Players would be kept updated on what happens during their trip.

Good and bad things can happen on trips, and it's a risk that the user can choose to take or not. However, the benefit in traveling is that you get different prices in different areas, and different products, so users can buy/sell for a profit.

I think I'm going to do that. Exept for the random events, how wierd that may sound to some of you I gues  :O. It is really an economy simulator, not adventure. Thought I will probably also do something with politics (you can become a major, that's a very importand feature) and maybe some illegal stuff (robbing cuncurents etc.).

There will be a possibility to set taxes to enter a town and it'll take time to travel. And also you need the dubbel of the hampers you normaly need to transport goods. But you don't need a shop then (because normaly everyone needs a shop to sell it's products), but your goods will be sold in a big special shop for goods imported from other cities.

I also had an intresting idea for an other feature in my game. When you want to produce goods (ot gather resources) you will have to send workers out for a period of time, and pay tthem when they're done. The following system I thought of to hire workers:

To hire workers you have to go to the house of the major (municipality house?) to make a contract. You have to buy a little fee
for each worker, and you can hire them for max 24 hours. And in the contract there will be mentioned the payment you have to
make everytime they worked for you. That stays the same untill your contract expires. Then you'll have to make a new contract
BUT the payment of the price will be changed. because every hour it will be updated, the more workers where hired the
previous hour, the higher the payment will be. Don't think it's clear to you  -_-

An example: I Hire 10 workers for 12 hours, so I have to pay 50 gold for every worker imediatly. The payment is currently 20
gold. So in these 24 hours i let them work 3 times. So I payed 3 times 20 gold for each worker. Now I'm going to make a new
contract, but the payment for each worker is now 40 gold for each worker, maybe come back  the next hour  :O.

i hope it's clear what i told, and now I want your opinion!

Yep,  I think i understand what you mean.

You have to be careful though, letting prices being determined completely by supply/demand.

In a virtual game, the economy can get quite out of hand, so don't let individual actions affect everything too much.
