Games with Skills
« on: July 05, 2008, 06:18:32 PM »
Do you enjoy games with skills such as Woodcutting, Mining, Fishing, Cooking, etc?
If so, which are your favorite? Would you like a game with a lot of skills like this? If so, what skills?

Sincerely,
-Marcus

I've always had a soft spot for non-combat skills  :)

I think the games that use these skills best attempt to tie them into the fighting somehow ie woodcutting and mining would be used to get materials for weapons and gear, fishing and cooking would be used to make food which, via some kind of food-magic (foodamancy?), would make your character better at fighting.

That's assuming that the main aim of the game is to be a successful fighter of course :ah:

As for which ones, it doesn't really matter to me as long as they are each valuable in their own way  ^_^

I've always been fond of the circular system of getting raw materials, making those into components (which need to be discovered somehow), making those into an item (again, discovered somehow) and that item being useful in some way- similar to the bazaar system in ffxii or something similar :P

skills are incredibly good if you work them properly ;)

Isn't this part of the "grind" that people dislike with MMO games? Lets face it after you successfully chopped down one tree how exiting will it be 1,000 times after that? People want to attack / fight (if this is the main goal of the game) The longer you make them wait to be able to fight or get strong enough to fight the more you run the risk of them leaving.

If you can automate the process of collection when they are offline or something I could see where this would be useful. If the game is very casual (less then 20 mins a day) then collection could work also with that type of game though your never going to see a lot of players online though.

It is actually a successful and rare type of game. Take Movoda.net, syrnia.com and my game stroceta.net as an example.

I like crafts and stuff... I'm very intrested in MMO game economics. When I play a game I usually even try to be a succesfull merchant, rather than trying to be a boring warrior like everybody else. That's offcourse the reason why I am making an economic game xD.

In my game resource gathering will be like for casual gamers. You order your workers to chop some wood, pay them and wait 'till they're done. Then move it to a trading city, move it to your shop and sell to other players. It will be a circle. e.g. Wood + Iron -> Shovel + Axe so workers can make wood and iron again. Offcourse more complex.

If you want to know more about my game, see my signature for the link to my development blog. If you have suggestions, please let me know, I'm so intrested in this stuff  :D.
