Hosting space
« on: June 27, 2007, 05:00:17 PM »
How much space is suitable for hosting an online text-base game? Considering DB growth..etc
And bandwidth for the average?

Thanks!

Start with a cheap $5 a month plan and then upgrade as you grow.  Something with say 5Gb disk space, 25Gb data transfer, mySQL database, php 4 and php 5, etc.  I always look at the hosting reviews at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/  You can find whatever you need there and you can even submit your own requests based on what you need and vendors will pitch deals to you.

Players total 12000, active 800
Bandwidth 30-35GB/month (code optimised for this, 5% used by GFX, 95% by html)
Database below 10MB
Discspace total: 1MB (code)+10MB(db)+200MB(visitors statistics after a few months, but you can clear this)

Generally 100MB discspace / 30GB bandwidth should be enough for a while. The real issue is CPU usage, most hosts will kick you out after w while.

I recommend www.bluerazor.com 3$/mo + 9$/year, they have a very nice policy when you overuse CPU, they will give enough one month to either fix, upgrade or move. And their servers are quite powerful, can handle around 50,000 hits per day.

Thats exactly right, your cpu usage is what will usually cause you issues when on shared hosting.  Its very important to make sure that your SQL queries are optimized.  Use a query counter and a page generation timer when you are doing your development so you can see what kind of overhead your scripts are generating.

It is a great site.  I was having a lot of problems with my server so I put in a request with what I wanted to spend a month and I got a 2 server setup.  One server runs web services, crons, etc and the other is specifically for mySQL.  It kicks ass to say the least =)

The power package isn't that great. The space it provides is quite little compared to other hosting companies.
The unlimited package could be called a scam, as there's no such thing as 'unlimited'. There is always a limit to the amount of space/transfer that you get. When hosting companies have packages that include 'unlimited' of either of these, it just shows that they're not very professional, and deceive their customers.

this is what the small print says about the unlimited usage policy

Unlimited use policy
High bandwidth usage: Streamline.Net offers an unlimited use policy by maintaining very large ratios of bandwidth per customer. In rare cases, Streamline.Net may find a customer to be using server resources to such an extent that he or she may jeopardize server performance and resources for other customers. In such instances, Streamline.Net reserves the right to impose the High Resource User Policy for the consideration of all customers.

it doesnt specify how high your bandwidth usage has to be though to have this imposed upon you so you are more than likely right - they are decieving their customers

All the policy means is that they can disable your account at any time if you are using too much bandwidth. Since it doesn't say how much is too much, it's completely their decision. 5GB could be too much, or 100kb could be too much.
Maybe they don't do this but a lot customers at other hosting companies have these kinds of complaints.

By resource usage they mean CPU and RAM not bandwidth. In short, once your game gets bigger they will kick you out (way before you use up your bandwidth).
To my experience, a game that uses 10GB bandwidth per month will be kicked for high resource usage from shared host.
You can use dts-net.com, they do not care about resource usage, but your site could/will be broken/vurnerable/slow (I DO NOT recommend them).

Depends on the popularity and overall size. Graphics do affect file size as well. I usually do text-based games, since they are easier for me to program. For example, I have a 10GB space, with 42GB or so bandwith. Although I'm not too sure if that is monthly or not. But text-based should not take up as much space.

Byet hosting is good for free hosting, but it doesn't support Cron Jobs. But you always can use services like this.

I can send you pics of my cocks if you want reference.

Well that is not with x10hosting then. They very good support. They always reply within seconds to minutes. You must create an account on the forum in order to use their service. It took me 1 day for the website to be fully up and running with no problems. I already am going to receive a FREE domain with them by getting a lot of credits that you earn by posting. This hosting however is NOT a Post 2 Host, but can get some pretty good rewards in time. You get A LOT of space and Bandwidth by just having ads placed at the top of every page. Or you can get half the amount (but still A LOT) by placing their text ads anywhere on every page. Or just get the basic crappy one with no ads. I think this is one of the best hosting service ever. The only down to this is that they are in the process of fixing, editing, and adding stuff for better service for the users right now which makes the server 95% uptime.

Cron jobs are unix scripts that are executed at timed intervals by the system. They're very handy for creating pseudo-services or simply automating some of the repetitive dirty work of a system administrator :)
Idiocy - Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
