Cron jobs are unix scripts that are executed at timed intervals by the system. They're very handy for creating pseudo-services or simply automating some of the repetitive dirty work of a system administrator

Can you give us a example of what type of things would be automated?

Once a week, you could have it tar and gzip your log files and place them in a backup folder.
Every day you could have it shutdown and restart your services to free up any resources lost to memory leak.
Every hour you could have it run a MySQL query to perform some in-game function that runs every hour on the hour.
