How do i create a text-based game?

could anyone tell me , or give me some help on making a text based game , what do i need , what scripting language is it , basically i have no idea.

Hi there,

From my experiance I tend to use php to create my text based games - it has been used for many text based games and is quite simple to learn and implement.

The best thing to do is figure out first what you want your game to do and then try to find the code to make it happen, and if you need any help with particular bit's of code or certain functions then ask in the forums. I'm sure people would be glad to help.

To make your own web game from scratch, you'd need a pretty good knowledge of php, as well as some knowledge of databases. Things would be signifigantly easier with a template, I don't know how much customization you'd be able to do without knowing php though.

This is all in theory of course as I haven't made one.

hmm it was ok.....i know treadon made his games using notepad but not sure weather it was html...but the game that used html i forgot the website so i cant let any of u judge lol

well he used php and html and a few other codes
you do not have to stick with 1 type of langauge you can mix and match
as long as you know how to do it properly you should be fine

You should have more than one person envoloved.  That way when you start slacking and feeling like your project will never get completed, the others can spur you on and keep you going.

For text based games use php and mySQL as the database.  Once you have a good handle on those, you can do some really good stuff limited only by imagination.

Yep, it would be nice to work on a game with other people. but it's hard to keep everybody organized and coordinated. You might overwrite works-in-progress accidentally, or change something that shouldn't have been changed.
I think the best way to go is with a private SVN repository, then test the files so they work together properly, then make updates at the end of the day.

Don't take my advice though... I'm still pretty new to SVN :)

I agree, it would be nice to have a game where there is more than one coder, maybe some story writers, or something like that.

Heh, I still remember my first run in with SVN, setting up the keys, OMG.  I guess its a bit easier if you are a nix guy, but me coming from a win based dev was a comedy, lol!

Does anyone else on here run their own online pimp game? I could do with some help and can't seem to find anyone. I am at the very basic levels when it comes to PHP/SQL/CSS etc so find some things pretty hard to change.

My problem is the whole script is badly coded so trying to edit is just a nightmare. There are lots of functions that need updating and it run's cronjobs which are just a pain as they don't work properly either.

I will start adding some questions and hopefully you will be able to help me out
