Is this normal on this forum?
« on: March 06, 2009, 09:51:44 AM »
Hello.

Sorry to bring this up, but i see allot of game Advertisements in general chat.
Or is it allowed to make such posts in general chat, instead for the board section: Advertisements?

Examples: alliancesatwar.com, Street Racers, Xtraticwar, The Legacy of Holy Castle New Server Opens! etc...

If I could, I would move it to the right forum  ;).

I also get the feeling, most people post on here only to advertise their games, blogs or whatever.

well...sure there are some posters here that do that exclusively....there are others that also contribute to discussions that plug there games/blogs, and finally there are some posters who dont have a blog or production game yet ....

a fairly common theme in many posts is the 'Please review my game and let me know what you think' ....Id say these are usually constructive, its good to hear the opinion of other game developers rather than just your players/testers...It also brings your attention to what other developers are working on.

Another common theme is coding help....helping out either with either coding aproaches, general coding knowledge, best practice, or even bugs...

Then there are the many discussions about game design....these are the crown jewels ...at least imho.

things that im generally not interested in are what you ate for dinner last night....what you though of the last film you saw...etc or the reasonably frequent recruit links...

However you do raise a fairly valid point, the forums here are not very stongly adminstered...that is were generally left pretty much to our own devices.....after all i get the impression the previous administrator got busy somewhere else and the current hosts/admins have got games to administer....

I guess I'm one of the people who contributes to discussions and occasionally plug my blog. For what it's worth, I'm not trying to be spammy, I posted a couple links because I thought they might prompt some interesting on-topic discussion.

If that's not cool, tell me and I'll stop immediately. I wouldn't want to abuse the forums. It looked OK when I read the rules, but I haven't seen an admin say anything one way or the other.

(And, uh, I've got a post up today about bad browser games with a funny screenshot. And one yesterday exploring game design, though there's not a lot of discussion of that here.)

Take a look at what forum you've posted in. Webmasters > General Chat > Text Games. It means that those webmasters are open to discussion about the game that they post. They are not just popping an ad up with the expectation that no one will speak their mind on the game. In the future, I would likely move those posts to Advertising unless a webmaster specifically requested that it remain here for discussion, but I don't at this time feel that those are in violation of the sub-forum they chose.

When we first took over we did a TON of cleanup, but we stuck to the areas that would benefit from our attentions the most. The time that would be needed to retro-actively sort all of the general posts is not, IMO, warranted with the minimal gains it would achieve.

Yes, the previous Admin got busy and a lot of things went unnoticed. It happens. Yes, we're busy now, but I don't feel that that has stopped me from adminning this forum since we took over. If someone feels I've dropped the ball, please let me know how and I'll work on it.

I think these topics, where the game developer wants to show his/her game and want constructive critique, belong in the "projects" section.

I agree with Scion that the discussions about game design are the crown jewels, but that's probably just because I'm most interested in the actual design itself.

There is nothing wrong with u harkins.
No need to say sorry

Actually it is not allowed to advertise in other boards but they can mention in their post when explaining something related to the topic.

Also we have an advantage of advertising in every post by using the signature...
