RPG Attributes
« on: May 07, 2007, 09:48:00 AM »
Okay, I'm trying to compose a list with a lot of possible attributes, skills and thelike to create something along the line of an rpg-glossary.

If you have an Attribute, please use the following template:
Quote
Attribute: ...
Affects: ...
Description: ....

Same goes for the skill:
Quote
Attribute: ...
Affects: ...
Affected by: ...
Description: ....

Attributes

Overview

As Chris pointed out there are 5 different attibute groups. Here's a quick overview with some additional and/or detailed attributes below.

Group 1: Physical Strength
Attribute: Strength, body, toughness, constitution, endurance, stamina, vitality
Affects: damage, HP, max armour to use, max weapon to use, max number of attacks
Description: Describe characters physical strength

Group 2: Movement of the Character
Attribute: Dexterity, agility, accuracy, acrobatics, speed, reflex, initiative
Affects: hit/miss chance, number of attacks, determine who deal first strike, trap avoidance, bonus to thievery skills
Description: Describe characters flexibilty and reaction time

Group 3: Mental Strength
Attribute: Intelligence, magic, mana, wisdom, knowledge, faith, will
Affects: spells and magic points, bonus to riddle quessing
Description: Describe characters mental and spell releated capabilities

Group 4: Social Behavior
Attribute: Charisma, appearance, haggling
Affects: NPC reaction, shop prices
Description: Describe characters social skills

Group 5: Perception and others
Other: perception, intuition, senses, morale, guts, bravery, luck

Details

Quote
Attribute: Strength
Affects: Damage Inflicted, Damage Taken, Wearable Equipment
Description: This is probably the most common attribute. A weak character won't be able to wield the nice and shiny greataxe and a strong character will deal twice the usual damage with a sword

Quote
Attribute: Dexterity
Affects: Chance to hit, Chance to be hit
Description: Again, a well known attribute. The higher the dexterity of character is, the harder it will be for an opponent to hit him and the easier an opponent is hit

Quote
Attribute: Vitality
Affects: Health, Health regeneration, resistances
Description: Vitality is best described as the damage a character can take before he/she dies or becomes unconsious. Vitality can be either translated to the amount of Hitpoints a character has or how high his resitances agains for example poison is.

Quote
Attribute: Bravery
Affects: Damage, Chance to Hit
Description: A very brave character is more likely to deal more damage but he will also probably be hit more often, due to the fact that he has become too brave for his own good. Cowardly characters tend to be better defenders since this is what they have been doing their entire life.

Quote
Attribute: Endurance
Affects: Length of battles, amount of swings
Description: Character with a high endurance can fight longer battles or can deal more blows with a certain weapon before tiring out and thus dealing less damage.

Quote
Attribute: Intelligence
Affects: Mana, Spell points, Spells, Speed of learning
Description: Intelligence is a multi-purpose attribute. It can be used to determine the amount of Mana/Spell Points a character can use, the amount and type of spells or simply to show how fast the user will gain a level.

Quote
Attribute: Speed
Affects: Number of swings, attacking order
Description: Speed can be used to establish a balance between heavy but slow hitters and light but fast hitters. Speed should always be checked against a weapon-type to see how many swings per round a character can gain. Or it can be used to compare two fighters directly

Quote
Attribute: Agility
Affects: See Speed
Description: See Speed

Quote
Attribute: Luck
Affects: Random Lucky Dodge, Critical Hit
Description: Increases the chance of dodging an attack completely, and the chance of hitting a critical hit, which does more damage than usual. Can also affect the chances of picking up/winning items/gold, etc.

Quote
Attribute: Charisma
Affects: Item Prices, Quest NPCs
Description: A higher charisma gets you price breaks when buying items and price increases when selling items. It also may affect the availability of quests, etc.

Quote
Attribute: Vision
Affects: Attack & Defense
Description: Increases ability to hit/block. If impaired, there's a negative modifier to these actions

Quote
Attribute: Hearing
Affects: Defense
Description: If impaired, there's a negative modifier to attack/defense as your equilibrium/balance may be off.

Quote
Attribute: Pride/Self Esteem
Affects: Defense, ability to reach next level, the ability to be feared
Description: A higher Pride gets you the confidence to achieve some not so secure goals. It also may affect the order of attack in combat situations, when a character with higher pride jumps first into the battle since the enemy fear that courageous attack.

Quote
Attribute: flexibility
Affects: Defense, escape, ability to learn skills from other character types (a magician with a low thief ability could be a plus)
Description: some characters could learn skills of other races

Skills

Quote
Skill: pretend
Affects: image
Affected by: pride, languages, flexibility
Description: a char with this skill could act as someone else

Quote
Skill: Drain
Affects: HP of opponent and Player
Affected by: Damage, Skill level
Description: A player with the drain skill gets a fraction of the inflicted damage added to his own HP.

Quote
Skill: Summon
Affects: Battles
Affected by: Skill level, surrounding
Description: A player that uses a summon skill, can summon a creature from the nearby surroundings. The power of the summoned creature is affected by the players level

Quote
Skill: Berserk
Affects: Damage deal, Damage taken
Affected by: nothing
Description: A berzerking unit deals double damage, but takes double damage in return

Quote
Skill: Steal
Affects: Money
Affected by: Dexterity, Stealth
Description: A player that uses the steal skill doesn't deal any damage in combat, but can steal the amount of damage he would normally inflict from other players

Please, if you have even the smalles addition, share it here. If you have more attributes, just post them and I'll copy them into the list above so that we have one nice list with all imaginable attributes.
And I haven't even started on the skills yet, so just go ahead and start posting them as well!

added those 2

And there's nothing cheap about the first one. Having multiple/different names adds flavor to the game :)

Generally there are four major groups of attributes. The exact attribute system depends which we choose and which effects we want.

Attribute: Strength, body, toughness, constitution, endurance, stamina, vitality
Affects: damage, HP, max armour to use, max weapon to use, max number of attacks
Description: Describe characters physical strength

Attribute: Dexterity, agility, accuracy, acrobatics, speed, reflex, initiative
Affects: hit/miss chance, number of attacks, determine who deal first strike, trap avoidance, bonus to thievery skills
Description: Describe characters flexibilty and reaction time

Attribute: Intelligence, magic, mana, wisdom, knowledge, faith, will
Affects: spells and magic points, bonus to riddle quessing
Description: Describe characters mental and spell releated capabilities

Attribute: Charisma, appearance, haggling
Affects: NPC reaction, shop prices
Description: Describe characters social skills

Other: perception, intuition, senses, morale, guts, bravery, luck

Quote
Attribute: Faith/Religion/Good/Evilness
Affects: Anything?
Description: This changes as a result of your actions, depending on whether you are a good guy or not, and affects... well, anything.

I suppose it belongs in... others?

I would make an exeption here and not call this an attribute but rather an alignment.

As I see it, an attribute is something which you can train. An alignment is something that only depends upon how you act to your social  (and sometimes physical) enviroment.

About what it would effect: Probably the behaviour of other pelople around you, so I would (if you can convince me to ;) ) put it under the social behaviour list.

Yeah, alignment can be used in conjunction with charisma as well. If you're a mean, ugly dude who worships the god of disease you probably won't get the best reaction from NPCs LOL
