Chat Client IN-GAME
« on: October 18, 2006, 06:32:16 PM »
Does anyone know where I can get hold of a chat script to run in my game? Just so that my members can communicate quickly and it makes things a little easier.

Thanks

I have found PJIRC, I want to be able to open as a popup. I also want to remove the channel options so that members cannot go into another channel. It needs a few customisations before it will work properly. I cannot make it use the members name either it gives out Anonymous 1, 2, 3 etc

If anyone has set something like this up before and can give me a hand I would be very grateful

Thanks in advance

I've never done any live chat programs on any of my games.  Most hosts don't allow chat type programs or irc interfaces on the servers.

I have seen a few pimp games with PJIRC installed so I know it can be done. I can connect to an IRC channel ok and type to other members but it logs the members in as Anonymous and not at their username so we do not know who the member's are unless they tell you.

You could convert a shoutbox to update inside a frame every few seconds... It would work almost as well as a real chat box :)

I just can't seem to get anything to work though lol. It seemed pretty simple to start with until I take another look at the code then just get lost lol

You could post a help topic :)
If you get any errors or don't understand the code, I can help.

Does this integrate with the game though? I want it to use the same layout etc so that it don't stand out like a sore thumb  :D

Be very, very careful HTML / Ajax or whatever type of chat you go with are HUGE bandwidth / CPU suckers...

I have some old HTML / DHTML chat source somewhere I'll see if I can find it.. I had to take it off line and go with a java applet because the cost was getting to much from my host to provide that type of chat.
