Combined Project!
« on: March 21, 2009, 03:45:49 AM »
Hi Again,

I had an idea. Maybe we could create a game taking little parts and ideas from everyone. Each person can submit ideas and codes or parts of the game.
So any ideas or suggestions just post below and if you may be able to help in some sort of coding then also post below. Hope this works and sorry if this is a spam post  ;D

P.S - I am expecting the only types of coding needed will be PHP, MySQL, HTML, Javascript and maybe CSS and C++

Discuss.....

If I recall correctly there was a topic like this a while back, didn't really get off the ground, to my knowledge at least.

I'm already working on my own game, but I may be able to help with some coding occassionally.

 :)

That just sounds really chaotic, also you would have many, many people vying for creative control.

Some combined project where you make some sort of mini games in one bigger game would solve the "vying for creative control". But on the other hand that does look less intresting to me.

yeah! thats right a game with so many varied inputs without a particular direction would surely be very chaotic and might not even get off the starting line.
Mean while i am busy with my own game but would be glad to help if needed

Well there'd have to be a followed structure and a list of all functions and such kept upto date with a lil blurb bout them.

We would need to assign a project leader, otherwise it wont work.

Design would have to be made, and everyone would have to know exactly what the game is about, so the game sticks to that.

Coding guidelines would have to be set, and an online xref would be helpful.

Then we should use SVN, and a ticketing system.

All the code files would need to be like, half comments too. Would be impossible to try to follow 10+ peoples thought process if things needs fixing.

yes lots of comments would be a must.

Commenting is good anyways even if its just going to be for your eyes only.

ahh yes a wiki that'd be a great way to organize it all

how to get started and what to read articles are a must, or a front page.

Ill agree that it sounds like a nice idea,

but realistically at the end of the day if i find myself with a spare few hours im much more likely to invest them in my own projects than some shared thing that im not sure will ever go anywhere....

Still dont let me stop anyone, Ill be first in line to congratulate any team that can bring this to fruition.

Yeah, it's the same here. But still, everyone can contribute as much as (s)he wants, so I would be happy to help out. Though probably not to much ;).

I also would be happy to see this project come to life. I really think there's a good game in that idea, I think it has potential.

I suggest that at the start there is a survey with polls etc

I agree, I would not be able to spend tons of time on it, but would gladly help out.

I think working on a project togethr would boost the community too... Sorta like team building exercises I guess.

I think were all a lil baffled at how who what where when to start this. I for one have no clue where to start. maybe other then start by putting up a wiki, and a svn, and getting a list of people who want to join together.

A wiki would be good, and it's free. Come up with a general idea of what the game is about, then add in ideas until it's solid.

Then you can dish out who works on what

yeah thats a good idea.......
but what of deadlines......
what if someone says i would do something and if doesn't finishes it or the deadlines keep on extending on him
in that case the project cannot be stuck for some people....

This has been spoken about a lot I believe and it's never really happened. Too much discussion about it and not starting on it. Another idea similar to this was a wiki but then it was decided against as it'd probably take away the importance/use of the forums. ::)

I have no real clue about  this but I will give some input. Also spellcheck  can only help so much

I would think the first thing that would have to be done is the database and how to connect to it. I believe the database is the foundation of any game. With this part done other parts should flow together easier. Anyone that helps would have the base setup and could build on it. The database could be designed so that it would fit any game theme.

Basic Checklist
- Database
- Login/Registration Script
- Game globals
- In game forum
- In game mail
- In game Chat
- Battle system
- UI // User interface
- Security // Once it gets to a point someone knowledgeable would check and update the script to improve the game security.

A thought, some users are awaiting a new contest. The ideal of a group project could work as a contest. Each basic aspect of the game is divided. Each part given a basic point value depending on difficultly. Each part is given a set duration to be done ,  the contests can last three months,  divided into parts. The database design is could be first, it last one week to get your design in. A winner is picked and that database is used for rest of competition. First second and third place would get a point value say 15 for first 10 for second and 5 for third and valid entry could get a point. At the end of the contest the points are added up and a winner is picked. Not sure what they would get but in the end we would all win.

Toxin, besides rep+, a few notes.

Your checklist looks good, but why is there a battle system on it? A game does not necessarily have a battle system. And if there was one, it should be developed with other game mechanics / elements in mind.

So design guidelines are of major importance! I opt for a modular design form with guidelines (so we can add small features at a time, somewhat like making a virtual world). Another option would be creating a fixed and full design before programming.

I also suggest using OOP or functions. That way we could create functions for security and other things.

I don't really like your idea about the contest. It's a good idea, but a little bit too complicated. Even worse: it focuses on programming skills etc, while for many people new to browser based game development having a (semi-)finished game is much more important. At the end it should be the game that counts, not everything behind it. The last point I don't like about it is that everyone who joins is obligated to contribute to one design, while a creating a game should be a creative process. You can make a game the way you like it! I know it's not the same for everyone, but for many it is.

But I like the idea of making little groups (2-3 people) of members on the forum joining the contest. That's something for the members themselves to decide though.

my 2 cents

@jannesiera
Battle system  was a  way of saying conflict interaction with the game world and players.  I was thinking very basic when I typed it. I also think a game needs some type of conflict to give it life how to go about doing it I am still tying to find out.

A basic Design Doc would make things go a lot faster also. We could cheat and just go D&D style. It is a system that could easily transfer to a PBBG without much to edit. I have not seen one that matches the game play, have found a few that resemble but over all not the same.

I thought about the contest thing as I was typing the other things. It would be cool and could give me or even other more motivation to get into coding. Competition to some get creative side going more. I was not thinking of it just being  skill related. NoUnique ideal would play a factor.
A down side, it would not be fare to only have a php contest. There are  other scripts that a person would be better at.

I would like to try a group project. Not sure why but I can not focus on my game. I have tried  to help others with my very basic knowledge (yahoo answers) than put it to use on my game. At one time I was helping make additions on someones game. Nothing big just Mccode.

I will try and think of some other things to add or ask about the project.
