Erm newbie needing help, BADLY
« on: October 09, 2007, 08:24:58 AM »
Hi, I am Ferinos. On most of the forums and websites I use, if they don't have a resident nutter, I usually fill that position in the first few days :)

Anyway, I love gaming amongst many other things. I am fond of browser based strategy games, the classic ones where you build a village up, train an army destroy yada yada yada. These can get boring and tedious after a while however, so I thoguth about designing my own browser based game. Problem is, I know pants all about php, and very little about html.

Knowing this, if anyone can suggest a way I could start making a game, and learn as I go, I'd be grateful. It's not that I am lazy when I say this, but I am one of these people, if I read every tutorial on the planet about html and php, I probably would be no better off ten years later. Why? I find it hard to learn through theory, I am fine learning something by doing it, but not by reading about it, but that's just me.

So if you know a way I could start designing my game (I have webspace,) and learn along the way so to speak, please help me out. I am also looking for people who are nutty enough tow ant to help me make this game, yeah, you'd have to be a real fruit loop, trust me :)

Anyway, thanks for reading, looking forwards to your answers soon.
PS> I can't pay anyone that helps me, but full creds will be given :)

Hehe, no worries, I love smilies too B)

Well, you don't have to know how to actually code in PHP, but it would be best if you could understand the syntax, and what the common functions do. If you can do that, then look at some simple PHP games and their source code, and figure out how they work.
Then, make your own modofications. Make very small changes, and see what is affected in the game, and once you really understand how it works, and think you can make your own, then go for it :)

Thanks. I don't know if this will make any sense whatsoever, but I have a clan, and when I designed our forum skin, I used the php template thingy. I couldn't code something to save my life, but at the same time, if you showed me like a page of basic/intermediate code, I'd probably understand a fair bit of it. I just wouldn't know how it works. For example, you could show me a piece of code for training a group of soldiers on a strat game. I would know if trains soldiers, I would know it uses resources, and thus would need some kind of a resource value there as well, but I wouldn't know how to change that.

Is there a FREE like strategy game template, or strategy game script? It doesn't have to be anything special just free. That way, I would have somewhere to start, and I could feel fine knowing, if I mess something up, not only have I learnt a lesson, how not to do it, but it also wouldn't take me a month of Sundays to get it working again, and try another method. -_-

As for looking at some simple php games and seeing how they work, there are a few people I have asked who have made their own games, and whether it be "Can you give me any tips, can you offer me some help/advice, can you tell me where I could start, can you tell me if there's a template etc etc etc,) the answer is usually go read the tutorials (which I explained really don't help me, it's not a case of laziness or ignorance) go away in a stronger manner of speaking, or they don't reply at all.   ><

Anyway, thanks again :)

PS smilies rule!
 :D :D :D

PPS, I am already looking on google and your forums for the answers, not just sitting on miazz doing nothing waiting for everyone 2 help me :)

Thanks, I had thought about that actually.
If I took that EZRPG, how hard would it be to turn it from an rpg, into a tribalwars style game?
NO:::::::: I am not copying TW, I played the game for a long time, I like the game, and I don't like stealing, nor do I like people who steal. I have an idea that can be best described as like that system, build up a base style.

Ancient Chinese Proverb say:
man who thrown in at deep end of river, well one of two tings happen to dat man.
Daat maan, oh he either drowns, (byebye Ferinos)
or he learns to swim in an instant. Maybe the same applies to game designing.
Trouble is,
I think I am about to drown

I don't think there are many tutorials on writing a PHP game from scratch.
And generally, most open source strategy games are quite complicated to understand.
You could look on www.hotscripts.com and see if there are any free PHP strategy games.

CakePHP is not for games. It's a general PHP development framework. I think it might be too advanced for you.

Converting ezRPG into a strategy might take a while. It's not meant to be a strategy game, and the features in it at the moment are very basic, even for an RPG.
You could still try and play around with it though, to learn some PHP and mySQL.

I would recommend KillMonster to learn some PHP. It should be easier than ezRPG.

Edit: btw, I'm the author of ezRPG. I'm not saying that you shouldn't use ezRPG, but that it's not meant to be used to learn PHP coding. Some of the code might be confusing to you. the 'ez' part of ezRPG is that it's easy to set up and play, not modify.
But if you want, you can still take a look. I hope I've commented most of the confusing parts :P

Haw! new member looking for help!

Unfortunately I haven't found any free scripts that cover about the same basis as TW or travian (or all the other similar games of that genre). So your chances of finding a game that teaches you exactly what you want are pretty slim. I suggest you really do look at other games (like ezRPG) for a start and try to modify those scripts and try out different things. Once you think you understand how a game works, then it really isnt' that far to go to make your own game.
Killmonster has a small strategy-like aspect to the game (recruiting armies and buying land, etc.) so you wanna concentrate on those parts. But beware that a lot of the code (especially mysql-queries) can be done in much cleaner, faster and more efficient ways.
Once you figure out how the form-mechanics in PHP work you can try to add different units, expand the forms, etc.

Hope this helps and doesn't sound like all the other yada-yadas you might've been getting.

yes, also being a person that find it very hard to learn from page after page of PHP it is very frustrating and would be so awsome if i could be pointed towards some heavily commented, functional PHP code.

Thanks. :)
