Free javascript game released with Creative Commons
« on: February 11, 2009, 05:37:34 PM »
I recently released one of my old Javascript games for free under the Creative Commons license. It's a very simplistic, one-player, fantasy hack'n'slash browser game... but I'm guessing that it might be useful to some people that come here looking for a place to start, especially for those who already know a little Javascript. You can download all of the files and modify them however you wish.

Game is here: http://deathraygames.com/play-online/drg/greenhydra/index.html
Files and license info are here: http://deathraygames.com/play-online/drg/greenhydra/license.html

If you have any comments on how to improve the game, they'd be useful to any who wants to build a mod and useful for me for future games.
Has anyone else released games under the CC license?

I don't know of any game under that license (I don't know much, by the way ;)). Though, I think it's inspiring that you did that. Hope it will be helpful to a lot of people.

From what I've been able to tell from looking at creative commons license blurb they tend to be for artistic mediums, and in fact when I contacted them about open sourcing some of my own work I was recommended to use MIT,BSD, (L)GPL, although they do offer a combination license so that you can open source the code and graphics in one fell swoop.

The combination licenses would be 'CC-GNU GPL', 'CC-GNU LGPL' or 'BSD'.

Yep, but I don't think anyone paid much attention because it was based in the C#/MSSQL Microsoft world, not LAMP. I went CC because of its modular nature and the comparative brevity of the license versus the alternatives. The fact that it wasn't specifically intended for software development didn't really appear to be an issue in my case.

To be honest, there are now waaaaaayyyy too many OSS licenses out there and it can be quite confusing to anyone looking into the subject for the first time.

It's an ok game, the difficulty curb is kinda high though. The first monster I came across, first click of the mouse on move was a rat. That rat killed me. The first monster you come across should never kill you.
