I need a tutorial for making a User System for a browser game

I am learning php off of a friend who has a browser based game. There's one problem. He's spanish so it's a case of a lot of what he explains would make sense, if I could speak spanish, or he could speak english lol.

Anyway, I need a way of making a user system, so people can make accounts, login to the game, logout from the game, a cookie is saved, and preferably they have a public profile with like their msn location etc etc.

I googled for tutorials like this, but I was born a blonde, I need step by step tutorials. The ones I have found so far skip little bits that to a smart person would be obvious. This is me we're talking about tho

So if you can link me to such a tutorial or make me one (images are a good thing btw)  I'd be very grateful.

it doesn't appear to be working

At least not for me. It asks for the location of a htpassword file. I don't have one of them on my server :O

after that, create some forms to update/insert the corresponding fields in a mysql-table. Oh, and a page to display those fields.
