Ideal Features
« on: October 01, 2007, 11:07:16 AM »
Hi All

Am in the process of developing a game from scratch, it is now my second game for which I am trying to gather as many thoughts as I can from other developers and players to determine what they would like to see in games.

All ideas will be welcome and I hope to incorporate any realistic (and non-overpowering) features into my game. I intend to make a game that has plentiful things for players to do, rather than those "I'll just logon once every 3 days and use all my energy" games.

Ideally I am looking for ideas that are exciting, will draw players to the game, and will keep those playing entertained, and to some extent - features that make the first things players want to do when they get in is logon and play.

I like the multiplayer aspect in games, especially teamwork. If you're going to have 'battles' in the game, give players the opportunity to team up and attack targets together, and defend each other. I love games that allow this type of game play.

I also like map games, where you explore a (graphical) map, gain experience as you go, and improve your character(s).

Also, maybe the choice of improving your character in many different ways, like in a MMORPG, so that you can focus on say, trading, or mining, rather than battle skills and levels.

The last two points are mainly for RPGs I suppose, so just ignore those if you're not making an RPG :)

I like RPG games where there's Arenas and you can battle and gain Titles or PvP Rank-Only Gear.

Well I do plan to code interactive multiplayer battles, where both users are to be online to action the battle and have a timeout limit so it doesnt last forever, which I feel adds to the fun.

I had already anticipated adding various types of routes you can take, for example, you can use your time to train up your warrior and then less time on upgrading your miner, but I am thinking of making it so you require all to some extent as to improve your warriors equipment, you will need resources your miner finds at various levels.

Personally, I like involved games where you have lots of choice to take any route you prefer, and then you can choose another route without losing your hard work. Anyone else feel the same?

Personally, I think a player should work hard to attain experience in a certain route, and they should learn to use it in their advantage. If you could 'switch' routes any time, it takes the fun and challenge away in being specialized in a certain area. I prefer games that only allow you to choose one route, but also allow you to experience the other routes by resetting the game regularly, or by letting us create multiple characters.

You could also let users pick 2 or 3 out of the total number of routes you can take, or at least make it expensive to change your route.

btw, when I talk about 'route' here, I mean something like a skill/spell tree. I'm not sure if you're talking about the same :P

Otherwise, you should set a limit to how much a player can develop their character in a certain route. If they focus on one route, they can completely master it, but if they choose to take several routes, then they can only partially complete them.

Well I intend for the game to have lots of routes to take and advantages/disadvantages for each obviously. Say for example each user is allowed 3 sub-users, they can only choose 3 of 10 routes and then will either need to utilise friends to gain full use of all routes and work together, or destroy one of their sub-users (or sell) to create a new one with a different possible route. (If that makes any sense? Is harder to explain than show once completed). But I thought I would get as many opinions as I could for the best type of game that is neither boring, too easy, too hard etc.
