Hello everybody ! My name is James and I found this community after extensive search on the web. My job and activity has nothing to do with games but I want to invest in an online mafia type game. I searched some info on the subject and I think these games are called RPG games ?
I have some questions for you and I will appreciate any help !
So... I don't have any programming skills but I am willing to buy a script and then hire someone to customize it following my ideas. I hope I am not breaking any advertising rules now but I need to give you guys some examples so you can understand what I need. I checked a couple of such games and found only ONE which is exactly how I would like my own game to be like.
The game in question is called THE OG WAR. It's on its dedicated site, apart from being an application on FaceBook. You have to register to see the features but I can upload some screen prints for you.
Unlike some other games like Mafia Death and Mafia Underground and such, I like this game much better because of its interface and all the features it has.

So, what I am asking is how can I be sure what script was used in this Og War game and how can I buy it, where from even.
Actually, ANY INFORMATION about this game would be much appreciated. It's the exact base for what I want to do, with some exceptions. Please let me know if you need any more info so you can reply to my topic.

Thank you all in advance ! James.

You might want to research some more if you're not sure what an RPG game is before spending any money on anything

not to mention we have more then enough mafia games, why not truly invest in something original? I mean granted its not my money to be spending, but I personally would think adding another game to a genre already full of games would not be much of a investment. I would learn more about the games themselves first, how they work, what makes a game succeed etc And then rethink your investment strategy.
And then you might say find a game that the internet is not already filled of a billion of *cough* mafia, pimp, mid evil, generic space *cough* or you could simply find a project that is of the same said genre's but totally reinvents what the standard for said genre should be. For me personally games are like anything else in life, I do not buy items because there are the new thing, or because there shiny, I buy things that do there function, and do there function well, and more then get my moneys worth. A awesome and easy example would be tools, craftsman for instance has a lifetime warranty on all tools, I buy one, if i break it, i simply take it back to sears for a new one, no charge, and go home happy :) that being said what works for one individual may not work for another, So I stand by the suggestion of Qwerty, in that you might want to learn a bit more about what your spending your money on, before your investment turns into a scam, or even worse a sink hole.

Logged into The OG War, they are using a modified version of McCodes, gee big surprise :)

You can buy this script for $300 @ http://www.mccodes.com

Bewared though, it'll take a lot of time or money to secure the code

I checked a couple of such games and found only ONE which is exactly how I would like my own game to be like.
Left menu: Jail(), Hospital(), Gym, top right: HP, Exp, Will, Brave, Energy. Do not tell me you saw only ONE game like that :D There are zillions of them. Not my problem, but I would increase my knowledge about games before spending any money if I were you. Unless you have a lot of bucks to throw away :)

codestryke,
THANK YOU ! That is exactly what I needed to know.  ;)

Chris, that Menu is indeed common to all of these games. But the appearance itself makes a great difference. And I do think details can make a great amount of difference. :)

AcidicOne, there may be zillions of such games but I only found this one better than the rest of them. In terms of graphics, this game kicks others' ass. I have checked a lot of such applications on FaceBook, they all look HORRIBLE. I may not know anything about games but I can recognize which of them looks like shit and which is far from that.

Qwety, I know RPG stands for role playing game, which is what I want to do and it's enough for me since I'm not the one who'll be coding anything. I don't actually care about knowing much about it. Another difference, eh. Owner and Programmer, right ? :) I am the one who'll be investing money in the final product, I'm not taking any classes to code it myself.

As for the investment side, I can say for sure that OG's owner benefits quite fine. I personally know 3 players on that site who have invested at least $2500 so far. By upgrading and stuff, for the pure addiction of the game. I am not really looking to make I don't know what amount of money but I am willing to give a try. It's a business like any other, you must invest and after that, who knows. I never heard about profit without loss attached...

I want to ask you some more things.... Say I buy that McCodes script and then hire a programmer to start rolling. I would like to know to what extent I could CUSTOMIZE the script ?
Asking this because I have ideas which I didn't see in those other games. So basically, my question is: Will that script allow me to change certain settings from scratch ?

One more thing about why I like this Og War game better than the rest of them. Personally, I think the graphics are very good. I know for sure that they used Photoshop to create the various backgrounds and it does look very neat. The menu is not scrambled and is very clean to access.
I am open to other opinions, please feel free to do so.... Thanks again !

To be honest, I think you'd be much better off getting a professional programmer to custom code a game to your specifications, rather than using the mccodes script. You'd be paying just as much to find a programmer who can fix up the script and then modify it to your needs anyways.

To answer your question: yes, the script will allow you to change anything you wanted - but there will probably be a lot of work involved, and if you're paying a programmer who hasn't used the script before, it might get a bit costly.

Also note that the way the mccodes script looks is nothing like what the og war looks like - you'd also need to pay a graphic designer to create the design, and a programmer to add it to the game.

That's true, you do not know anything about programming you could hire someone, you do not need to know anything about game adminstration as well you could hire, neither server administrattion skills are needed you can hire someone to make backups fix server when broken and keep it online, community management skills are not essential as well you could hire community manager, the same goes for advertising & promotion, graphics and so on... The question is, do you really have so much money? :D At least learn the basic and simple things, otherwise the mere few thousand bucks per month will not be enough to cover the costs.

As for modification, it depends. What is you wildest idea you want to implement? In theory you could change everything, but sometimes it is easier to write from scratch. You would need to give more details to estimate this.

I would hire 2 programmers, one to write the stuff, the second to work as your consultant, he would check the other programmer's work, prepare requirements, etc but do not write a line of code. Or just buy the script and modules and hire someone to put it together (but I still would hire someone else to check the final sstuff, especially security since this is what these scripts are unfamous for).

Anyway, good luck, and do not forget to come back here after few months and tell us how it worked out (it sounds very exciting, starting a game as an investor only).

I would have to agree as well, think it would be interesting for the rest of the game owners to see the trial and error of investment of a 2nd party in relation to game owners.

i'm interested too in purchasing a working, good script, but it costs a lot, it has to be something original, and the advertising for it would cost a lot too
