If you run windows then I would suggest Easyphp over XXAMP.  You can get easyphp here: http://www.easyphp.org/telechargements.php3  Version 1.8 is php4, mysql4, and version 2.0 is php5, mysql5 so get whatever version you want to try.  It takes only a few minutes to install and then all the servers start by clicking the easyphp icon.  Once you get that done you can get some tutorials and start looking at some simple php code.

Yeah, EasyPHP is what I run - and after trying a few different ones, I'm sticking with it.

Yeah?
I've never tried easyPHP. I've always used xampp.
What's the difference?

I did try XAMPP but not extensively - I just did not find it as easy to use as EasyPHP (haha, hence the name I guess!). It is probably just personal preference.

When I tried XAMPP the mySQL server would not start automatically for me.  I would have to start XAMPP then go check to see if mySQL was running, usually it wasn't, then go start it manually.  It just seemed very unstable.  Easyphp is easy as install and run.
