Need some help on my Layout
« on: June 18, 2009, 11:36:31 AM »
I need some help in redesigning the layout of my game. Until now I always had a horizontal bar at the top of my page. See attachment for a current example of what I mean.

But as you can see, I now use 7 instead of only 4 or 5 resources and the horizontal bar in the current layout just won't do anymore (at least that's what I think). So I'd really appreciate some alternatives to the current way I display the resources (I would do it myself, but I'm quite high on painkillers[The doctors felt a strong urge to cut my lower leg almost in two] and can't really think of a good way).

Oh, I use a 2 column layout: A header up top with game title, a navigation list on the left and on the right is the content. Inside the content is the resources-bar in question.

As I said: any input is welcomed!

[edit]: everyone gets some internet money for their participation

I think that that looks fine. For 8, you would need a different approach, but I think 7 works.

If you have the horizontal realestate to add another column you could consider shifting to a three column layout with the third column having a number of display boxes....the top can be the current resources....the next box recent events...and so on with usufull information the player might need...

if you dont you could take a look and see if you cannot do something similar to a drop down menue with an on hover display....although that would mean you loose your imediate visual feedback.

if none of that fits....welll maybe consider changing the icons....make them smaller so that they are less visually intense and take up less space after all its the actual numbers that are the important piece of information here........or even eliminate the images all together and just go with colour coding the numbers.....although that wouldnt be very newbie friendly it certainly helps if you need to condense as much info into one space as possible.
