very noob question
« on: August 30, 2010, 09:14:51 AM »
Sorry for the noob question;

I would like to learn actionscript to assemble banners and flash animations. I have the following questions:

- What application i have to use
- Is actionscript hard to learn?

Thanks

Actionscript is a programming language in Flash. There are several versions of AS. I would say AS2 (haven't checked AS3) is quite similar to C/PHP.

Generally it is very easy (assuming you are a PHP programmer), but you have to went through the stupid Flash, which was designed for artists :)

You need "Macromedia Flash MX something". There is only one flash maker (original Adobe) and there are no alternatives. The newest versions are becoming more and more similar to 3D Studio Max, so experience in that one could help.

You could also try programming directly in PHP (it allows creating Flash+AS) but it is an excercise for a really hardcore programmers (but I tried it, it works, just very unconvenient).

AS3 is very similar to JavaScript, so it's moving up in the scheme of things. :)

If you are looking to create animated banners and simple animations I would recommend Swish rather then the full blown creator made by Adobe (Adobe assimilated Macromedia). It is also a LOT cheaper :)

Adobe provides a free Flex SDK that will let you compile ActionScript into SWFs - here.

AS3 bears a strong resemblance to JavaScript, with a bit more of an emphasis on strict typing (but only if you want it). Good luck!

Thank you all for your help.

Basicly (from what i understood) i need to assemble graphics made from my friend into animations.

I could then use Flex SDK (without downloading all the Adobe Creative Suite) to write an Actionscript that loads the graphics and create the animation. Once compiled the ActionScript i will have a .swf file.

Is it correct?

Want to know if I understand this right, but can I download this Flex SDK and create flash games withouth having to buy the expensive flash builder software?

Yeah thats pretty much the sum of it, but you'll have to do all the assert loading and management your self, but its a small price to pay for free'ness.

I started working my way through http://www.brighthub.com/internet/web-development/articles/11010.aspx a while back, but lost motivation :)
